It was good
Positives:
Hostels in America usually aren’t the best quality, but this one was pretty good. Definitely a great value considering the location and quality.
Bed was comfortable enough where I was able to get some decent sleep. Beds had two outlets and a light. Sometimes guests make noise and come and go late at night or turn on lights, but that’s not an issue of the property.
Lockers were a decent size. Either you could fit only a 24” inch luggage case in there or fit a backpack along with some other bags. Need to bring own lock.
Location is in the heart of Downtown LA near Whole Foods, Target, and about 15-20 minute walk to Crypto Arena. Skid Row area is 15-20 minute walk in opposite direction, closer to Little Tokyo. Will probably see some homeless people out and about, but it’s common for LA. I lived in DTLA in Little Tokyo for several years previously, and never had homeless bother me except ask for change at times.
Also pretty close to Union Station, which makes it cheaper if you’re flying in to LAX and take the FlyAway bus to Union station for about $10 and then grab an Uber from there to Freehand for about another $10-15. Saves about $30-50 doing this when Uber or Lyft rides are about $50-90 one-way now from/to LAX.
Negatives:
- beds could use curtains for more privacy.
- showers and bathrooms could use some hooks for hanging clothes or toiletry bags. There is a shelf that’s not too wide and also didn’t seem like it’s cleaned up much as there were items from other u go guests like creams or toothbrushes.
- Elevator keycard system didn’t seem too reliable at times. One time my keycard stopped working, but front desk is 24/7 so someone is always there to fix the issue if this happens.
