There was a steep decline in staffing since the last time I visited. Spa staff were seriously overwhelmed and could not accommodate guest requests. The manager was helpful when I shared concerns but I hope this is remedied because it impacted our spa experience which has been one of the highlights of previous stays.

The hotel bares the name of "Hotel & Spa", however, the actual spa service is extra. The hotel does have an outdoor pool which guests could use for free. However, it was impractical in the cold raining winter. The actual spa with the indoor pools, however aren't free. Guests have to pay $49 for a day pass. We was surprised to find out we had to pay extra for the spa pool. In addition, there was a waiting list for the pools and bath house, so, the service was not guaranteed if you are willing to pay. We wish the website would have that information.

For the amount of money we paid, we expected to receive 5 star amenities. However the hotel rooms and bathrooms were date.

Great aspects: the staff, service and spa.
The Fairmont's spa facilities are the jewel in its crown. They are the best feature of the property.
The gym is also new and has a great selection if equipment.
In terms of service, it was good. The reception team members were friendly, responsive and accommodating to requests. The valet and bell man was kind and funny. The waitstaff at Sante were responsive, friendly and brought out the meals timely.
Also, a note on Sante: it had a variety of breakfast options for people with different food needs.
Negatives:
How the luxury lost its lux: poor maintenence of the property and facilities.
The facilities were dilapidated. The building we stayed in had paint chipping all over the hallways, and the entry way and walls around the property have chipping paint. This is not what one envisions for a property with the longstanding reputation of one of Sononma's finest hotels.
In the room, the bathroom appeared to have been renovated in the past year. However, due to a lack of a vent and poor maintenance mold was growing on the ceiling and on the shower. This is not acceptable. Mold at a minimum can trigger allergic reactions. The pervasiveness of the mold in the bathroom indicated that it probably has spread into the wall and ceiling and may require them to be torn out to be remediated.
In addition, the bathroom lights are motion sensor activated and you cannot permanently disable the activation. What happened is at 5:00am, I went to use the bathroom and all the lights went on. This jarred my nervous system and I couldn't get back to sleep. So long for a relaxing and restful weekend away!
