Positives:
It was located right close to my conference, which was handy, but for a fraction of the cost. Front desk staff (at the other hotel) were reasonably responsive and helpful. It was the only place within my budget (that wasn’t a hostel), so here we are.
Negatives:
It is so, so loud. Both with noise from the street, and the walls are so thin, so you can hear *everything* (and I mean everything) in the hallway and adjacent rooms (like you can hear people if they breathe loudly). Bring your best earplugs. There’s no housekeeping and they won’t give you enough of anything to last more than a couple days so you’ll have to ask. Check in is at a hotel a block away, there’s no reception for the Herbert. Probably because it’s so cheap there are people hanging around the entrance who will ask you to let them in.

Positives:
It was very close to Moscone Center, BART and cable car. So, it was very easy to get around the city and go to the expo I went there for. Moreover, there is a Walgreens next door and two restaurants in the same block.
Negatives:
The room I got was with shared bathrooms with one key each. So, I had to be caring the keys all the time along with the room keycard. It was more of a nuisance than a problem in itself. Besides this, I was luck to have neighbours on the next room that were not too noisy as I could hear everything they did in their room.

Positives:
The location and price were great, exactly what we needed for our stay for GDC. The room was also very spacious and the beds very large and comfortable.
Negatives:
There weren't a lot of surfaces to leave our belongings on (one bed had both end tables), the lights would randomly turn on after having them turned off, water would pool up in the bathtub and stay there the next day, and the Wifi connection was terrible. I also didn't like that we had to go to another hotel to grab our hotel keys, and that there was no one at reception in our hotel. For our one week stay, the room wasn't serviced once.

A no-frills, ample spaced budget...
Positives:
wooden floor and not carpet
Negatives:
from a privacy perspective, you can hear the person in the next room and what they are doing or what is happening

Very good
Positives:
Flooring was new vinyl plank and walls were freshly painted. Windows were relatively new and sealed well.
Negatives:
Bathroom door frame leaked from water supply pipe upstairs. Probably around 1 litre of water dripped through over the week I was there. What’s worse is that it was obvious this leak has been there for months because of the way that the door and flooring have swollen and the tile is recessed where the drip lands. Room 609 (Queen room with private bath).
Additionally, no tissue (only toilet paper), no mini fridge, no ice box or ice machine, no towel rack, no iron, no closet shelf, no cabinets/dressers.
