Positives: I used to walk by the "North by Northwest" hotel when I lived in Chicago's Near North. On sabbatical abroad for the academic year, I was passing through the city on my way to visit family over the holidays and found a great deal on Booking.com. Mine was a corner room, with a nice city view and tons of space. It was clean and comfortable, and the wifi worked great. The hotel was decked out elegantly in white for the holiday. Staff could not have been nicer. I was running around getting stuff for Christmas and never went to the fancy bar, but it doesn't seem to have completely lost its cachet. If you know Chicago, you know that this location is ideal: right near the lake, the Division and Rush Street entertainment areas, the Red Line L (Clark/Division), key bus lines (22, 70, 151), grocery stores, cafes, drugstores, etc.
Negatives: If I had been paying a lot, maybe there would be a couple of minor quibbles. None springs to mind, however. My expectations were not elevated, in light of some of the comments found online. My room did not feel dated, at all, however. And anyone with any ounce of romance in their soul has to be affected by the history of the place and the beauty of the surrounding neighborhood.
