The place was filthy and smelled like dead fish. Despite having paid in advance for two nights, I literally threw they key card on the bed and left to find another hotel. I couldn’t stay there

I called ahead to let the hotel know that I will be late for my check-in and was assured that everything is fine. I showed up at the hotel to a very rude employee who just wanted us to leave because the reservation was canceled. She ended up giving us a room after a long discussion, which smelled like a chicken coop and blood in the shower. She switched us again to a room that was already occupied by a guest, before giving us a room with one bed for 3 guests. That was our only option before having to sleep in the car so we took it and checked out the next day.

Positives:
ESA Merrifield has 2 floors but NO elevator. So, if you have difficulty with stairs, request a ground floor room. The staff did accommodate us by switching us to a ground floor room the next day.
ESA Merrifield advertises that they have breakfast. Next to the coffee service in the lobby, they have a rack with packages of instant oatmeal, for which they have hot water. As for anything else, there's only a packaged muffin and/or a "fruit bar," which is really a long fig newton-like item. This is not even a continental breakfast.
ESA Merrifield is comfortable enough, and the rooms are clean. Each room has a TV, an electric stovetop and a refrigerator. As expected, the bathroom comes with soap and shampoo. It's a pretty good location, maybe a mile from Dunn Loring Metro. It's reasonably priced for the area.
Negatives:
Not knowing that there was no elevator for the 2nd floor. The A/C was good - easily adjustable - but the fan was a little loud. And for 2 people, the bed could have used a 4th pillow.

The room was a good size. Bathroom was clean.

The room smelled like smoke. All my clothes smelled like smoke after my stay. Even my suitcase smelled like smoke. It was awful. I wouldn’t recommend anyone stay here, ever. The outside patio smelled of urine, like people urinated outside the rooms and by the stairwells. This was an awful experience. The air conditioner was outdated. Everyone has a wall thermostat now. I would never stay here again. It was EXTREMELY overpriced for a motel. I travel a lot for work and would never recommend this place to my organization.
