Top 10 Essentials When Moving With Pets

Planning a move with your furry family members can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Pets are sensitive to changes in routine, so the more prepared you are, the smoother the transition will be for everyone.

The key is simple: treat your pet like part of the move planning from the very beginning and make sure you have the essentials ready before moving day arrives.

1. Medical Records

Before you move, request a copy of your pet’s medical records from your veterinarian. You’ll need these to transfer care to a new vet and ensure continuity if your pet needs treatment after the move.

2. Medications and Preventatives

Make sure you have enough medication to last through the move and a short adjustment period afterward. This is also a good time to refill flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives so you’re fully stocked.

3. Updated ID Tag and Microchip Info

One of the most important steps before moving is updating your pet’s identification. Make sure your pet has a current ID tag with your new contact information and update your microchip registration as soon as possible.

4. Favorite Toys

Familiar items help reduce stress. Bringing your pet’s favorite toys can provide comfort during travel and help them settle more easily in a new environment.

5. Bed or Familiar Bedding

Having something that smells like home can make a big difference. Bring your pet’s bed or blanket so they have a familiar place to rest during the transition.

6. Food and Water Supply

Pack enough of your pet’s regular food to last through the move and the first days in your new home. Changing food suddenly during a stressful time can upset their stomach.

7. Travel Bowls

Bring bowls you already use or pack collapsible travel bowls for convenience. Easy access to water during travel is important, especially during long moving days.

8. Safe Travel Setup

Your pet should be safely secured in the car at all times. Whether you use a carrier, seat belt harness, or barrier system, make sure your pet is comfortable with it before moving day.

9. Seat or Cargo Protection

Moving days can be messy. Seat covers or cargo liners help protect your vehicle and make cleanup much easier after travel.

10. Potty Bags

Always have pet waste bags on hand for rest stops along the way and once you arrive. It’s a small item that makes a big difference during travel and transition.
